A Vision for Public Education in Georgia
The Vision Project was officially sanctioned by action of the Georgia School Superintendents Association Board of Directors on April 14, 2009, and the Georgia School Boards Association Board of Directors on May 19, 2009. A Planning Team and a Design Team were established by the Executive Committee for the project on June 11, 2009.
The first official meeting of the Design Team was on June 25, 2009, followed by a second meeting on July 21, 2009. At these two meetings the Design Team developed a proposed framework for the project, stated their vision for and value of the project, established meeting dates for the Planning Team, approved presenters, and discussed stakeholder engagement in the project.
The meeting dates established for the Planning Team are:
- September 21 and 22, 2009
- November 16 and 17, 2009
- January 26 and 27, 2010
- March 23 and 24, 2010
- May 12 and 13, 2010
- September 21 and 22, 2010
The Planning Team has been organized into five Work Teams which will be meeting in a variety of settings during the course of the project with stakeholder support and involvement to develop or identify key issues, a vision, transforming principles, processes and procedures, best and promising practices, and policy and program implications for each of five system components. The system components to be addressed by the Work Teams include teaching, learning, and assessment; early learning and student success; human and organizational capital, governance, leadership, and accountability; and climate, culture, and organizational efficacy. Two additional system components; financial resources and physical resources, will be addressed by the entire Planning Team. Initial drafts of all documents will be presented to the Planning Team at the May 12-13, 2010, meeting.
During the period January 15 to April 15, 2010, six focus group sessions will be held across the state to provide an opportunity for input by educators, local citizens, community groups and organizations, and students.
From May 15 to September 20, 2010, the Design Team will develop a dissemination strategy to ensure that the work of the Planning Team is communicated to stakeholders across the state for consideration and adoption.
The final project report is to be ready for distribution on or before November 30, 2010, at which time the dissemination strategy will be implemented.
